PART 2

No one said anything.

For a few seconds so long that it seemed like the whole room had forgotten how to breathe, Tyler remained standing next to the banquet table.

His eyes never left Claire.

Megan is still holding the microphone.

The smile on her lips had completely disappeared.

“General… Morgan?”

A customer at the back table whispered.

Then another person turned and asked:

“Is she a real general?”

Claire heard it.

But she still sat still.

She doesn’t need to explain.

Tyler was the one who understood best what had just happened.

He is an officer of the rank of major. He knows that a star on the shoulder of a military uniform is not something that can be casually worn to look beautiful. He knew exactly what rank Claire held.

And he also knew he had just witnessed something that no one in Megan’s family seemed to understand.

The woman they just called a “government employee” is actually a **Brigadier General**.

A female general of the United States Army.

Twenty-two years of service.

Twenty-two years and Claire has never shown it off to her family.

Tyler slowly turned to Megan.

“Do you know who she is?”

Megan did not answer.

She looked at Claire.

For the first time that night, the two sisters’ eyes met without a safe distance between them.

Claire remained calm.

“Megan,” she said softly, “you don’t need to explain.”

That statement made the room even more awkward.

Because Claire is not angry.

No blame.

Do not raise your voice.

It was that calmness that made Megan’s words a few minutes ago sound more cruel than ever.

Tyler looked at the microphone in his wife’s hand.

“What did you just call her job?”

Megan swallowed.

“I… was just joking.”

“I know.”

Tyler replied.

“But I don’t know what I’m joking about.”

The atmosphere around the family table became heavy.

Gerald, Claire’s father, finally stood up.

He looked at his daughter.

There was something in his eyes that Claire had rarely seen over the years.

Pride.

But this time, it comes with shame.

“Claire…”

She looked at her father.

“Dad.”

Gerald was silent for a few seconds.

“When did you reach this level?”

Claire smiled slightly.

“It’s been a while.”

“A while?”

He repeated, his voice hoarse.

“I never told my parents.”

Claire looked down at her glass of water.

“I said.”

“You said you work in national defense.”

“Yes.”

“But you never said…”

He didn’t finish his sentence.

Claire understands.

He wanted to ask why she never told her.

Why do you hide everything?

Why was her family the last to know who she had become?

Claire looked up.

“Because every time I talk about work, everyone changes the subject.”

No one responded.

That statement is not big.

But it made some guests look down.

Megan started to tear up.

“Claire, I didn’t mean to…”

“I know.”

“I really don’t know.”

“I know.”

“I thought you were just doing paperwork…”

Claire looked at her sister for a long time.

“That’s the problem.”

Megan was dumbfounded.

Claire did not say more.

Tyler walked closer to Claire.

This time, he did not sell.

He just stood before her like a soldier standing before a superior he had just realized he had unintentionally offended.

“General Morgan,” he said softly, “I’m sorry.”

Claire shook her head.

“No need.”

“But I…”

“Tyler.”

Claire smiled.

“Today is your wedding day. Don’t let this become our story.”

Tyler was silent.

Then he looked at Megan.

“Are not.”

One word.

But it was enough to make Megan look up.

Tyler continued:

“This is our wedding day. And if a woman who has spent more than twenty years serving her country is humiliated by her own family today, then we have to at least admit it.”

The whole room was silent.

Claire was about to stand up.

But Tyler continued.

“There is one more thing everyone should know.”

He looked around the ballroom.

“General Morgan has more than just a star on its shoulder.”

A few guests began to look more closely at Claire’s military uniform.

Medals.

Badges.

Signs that they didn’t care about before.

Tyler took a breath.

“Those things are not for decoration.”

Claire looked at him.

For the first time, her eyes showed a bit of warning.

“Tyler.”

He stopped.

Claire shook her head very slightly.

“No need.”

Tyler understands.

He doesn’t speak anymore.

But at that moment, an elderly man at the back of the room suddenly stood up.

He looked at Claire for a long time.

Then he said:

“Sorry… I served at Fort Bragg.”

Claire turned around.

The man looked at the badge on her uniform.

“You used to command the unit there, right?”

Claire didn’t answer right away.

The whole ballroom started to stir.

Megan looked at Tyler.

Tyler looked at Claire.

And then Claire slowly stood up.

Not to get back at my sister.

Not to receive compliments.

But because she knew this moment was beyond a family joke.

There were things she kept silent about for many years.

Unspeakable tasks.

Sleepless nights.

The soldiers she once sent to the battlefield.

Decisions that if wrong just once, the consequences can be irreversible.

She looked around the room.

Then looked at his sister.

“Yes,” Claire said.

“I used to command there.”

A intake of breath rang out somewhere in the crowd.

But no one knows yet
