By SPECIAL INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER FOR THE DAILY MAIL

In one of the most horrific and harrowing criminal trials ever heard in a British courtroom, the conclusion of the case against former secondary school teacher Jamie Varley has left legal teams, police officers, and the general public completely SPEECHLESS.

Following a grueling trial at Preston Crown Court, 37-year-old Jamie Varley was handed a whole-life tariff by Mr Justice Turner—ensuring he will spend the remainder of his natural life behind bars without any possibility of parole.

His partner and co-defendant, 32-year-old former sales manager John McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for his role in allowing the death of a child and related cruelty offences.

The trial unveiled a sickening double life maintained by the couple in Grimsargh, Lancashire, shattering the illusion of a respectable, professional household and exposing the tragic nightmare endured by 13-month-old Preston Davey during his four short months in their care.

A Facade of Respectability Masking Pure Evil

To neighbors, colleagues, and adoption panellists, Jamie Varley appeared to be an ideal candidate for parenthood. As a high school science teacher involved in student welfare, he was trained to identify signs of harm in young people.

Together with McGowan-Fazakerley, Varley passed rigorous vetting procedures and was formally approved for adoption in early 2023. In April 2023, baby Preston—who had been placed in emergency foster care shortly after birth—was moved into their home.

Yet, behind closed doors, a horrific campaign of physical and psychological abuse began almost immediately.

The Fatal Emergency Call That Exposed the Truth

On the evening of July 27, 2023, emergency services were called to Blackpool Victoria Hospital after Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley arrived with 13-month-old Preston, who was unconscious and in cardiac arrest.

Despite desperate attempts by medical teams, the infant was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

A subsequent Home Office post-mortem revealed the horrific reality:

  • Cause of Death: Acute upper airway obstruction resulting from smothering.

  • Extensive Injuries: Over 40 separate physical injuries across the infant’s body, including a healing arm fracture and severe internal trauma.

  • Digital Evidence: Hundreds of illicit digital images and text messages recovered from mobile devices detailing systematic child cruelty.

National Outcry and Safeguarding Scrutiny

The horrifying details presented during the prosecution’s case have sparked urgent calls for a sweeping review of adoption vetting procedures and social care oversight across the United Kingdom.

During the four months Preston lived with the pair, he was brought to medical facilities on three separate occasions and monitored by social workers, health visitors, and healthcare staff. Yet, despite multiple contact points, the mounting abuse went undetected until it was tragically too late.

A Whole-Life Order: No Parole Ever

In passing sentence, Mr Justice Turner described Varley as a “wicked, arrogant liar” who used his position of authority and intellect to deceive social services while inflicting unspeakable harm on a vulnerable child.

By imposing a whole-life order, the court ensured that Varley joins the ranks of the UK’s most dangerous offenders who will never be released from prison.

As the legal proceedings draw to a close, local authorities and children’s welfare organizations have initiated independent safeguarding reviews to examine how adoption procedures can be overhauled to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again.
