PART 2 — NIGHTINGALE PROTOCOL
Dr. Rowan did not smile.
Instead, he turned another page.
“Dramatic?” he repeated quietly.
He looked at my mother.
“Your daughter once performed emergency surgery on a patient after three other doctors had already declared the situation nearly hopeless.”
Mom opened her mouth.
He continued before she could speak.
“She worked for twenty-two hours that night. She collapsed in the supply room afterward. Then she came back the next morning because the patient had developed a complication.”
The room had become completely silent.
Claire finally looked at me.
I could see something changing in her expression.
Dr. Rowan placed another document on the table.
“This is Nightingale Protocol.”
My mother frowned.
“It was never supposed to be public,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I swallowed.
“It was created after a series of failures in emergency trauma care. A small group of physicians were asked to develop a system for treating patients when conventional procedures weren’t working.”
Dr. Rowan nodded.
“Elena led the final implementation.”
My mother stared at him.
“You’re saying she created this?”
“No,” he replied.
He looked directly at me.
“I’m saying she saved the people who created it.”
Then he turned the page.
At the bottom was a signature.
My signature.
And beneath it, a date.
October 14, 2019.
My mother leaned forward.
“What happened that night?”
Dr. Rowan looked around the room.
“That,” he said, “is the part Elena never wanted her family to know.”
